Since its conception in 1971, The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) has been encouraging women and girls to pursue their careers in mathematical sciences while creating equal opportunity and treatment for them in the same.To achieve this purpose, the Association for Women in Mathematics in 1988 started executing NSF-AWM Travel Grant Program exclusively for women.
NSF is the National Science Foundation established by Congress in 1950 with one of its aims to further the advancement in science and support funding in research and education in various fields of science and engineering.Patron of AWM is National Institute of Standard Technology- a non-regulatory federal agency within the United States Department of Commerce.
The NSF-AWM Travel Grant Program smooth the way for women mathematicians to join various research conferences in their respective fields thus providing an invaluable opportunity to accelerate their research activities and enhance their perceptibility in varied research venues.By opening entry of women into these meetings, there are many opportunities to draw more and more women speakers often found inadequate at many of the research conferences.
There are two types of Travel Grants: The Mathematics Travel Grants and The Mathematics Education Research Travel grants. The Mathematics Travel Grants furnish the applicant’s full or partial expenses for travel and subsistence for a conference and meeting in arena of her specialization.
Under this grant, up to $1500 is available for domestic travel and up to $2000 can be availed for foreign travel with the condition that U.S air carriers should be used for traveling abroad. Whereas the Mathematics Education Research Travel Grants also support full or partial expenses for travel and subsistence but in math or math education research.
The applicants must be mathematicians who are attending a research conference of math education or math education researchers attending a math conference with exception to the mathematics education researcher who is attending a mathematics research conference. Under this grant also, applicant is eligible to get up to $1500 for domestic travel and $2000 for traveling to other countries in only U.S. air carriers.
Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) and the Division of Research, Evaluation and Communication (REC) of the National Science Foundation provide funds for these travel grants.
The eligibility for this grant requires that the applicant’s research or conference should be in the field, which is supported by Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS). Only woman is eligible to apply but she should hold a doctorate or equivalent experience possessing a work address in the USA and if applicant is an unemployed mathematician, then home address is essential.
The applicant is ineligible if she has been awarded this travel grant in the past two years and if she has received any external governmental funds of more than $2000 annually. However, if an applicant has received partial support from her institution or from a non-governmental agency does not make her ineligible.
Every year, there are three award periods with due date of applications fixed on February 1, May 1, and October 1 of every year. It is compulsory to submit applications online only. You can also contact Jennifer Lewis at 703-934-0163, ext. 213 for any help regarding online submission.
